A wonderful book, but not easy to read on the Kindle
By Simon Manley
The 4 stars is specifically for the Kindle edition. The content of the book, and the print edition, is 5-star material.

But like so many technical books, the diagrams do not fare well on the small monochrome Kindle screens. It is essential to zoom the image, but even enlarged they seem pale and blurry. This is a problem with the b/w Kindle hardware, not the file compression algorithm: the images look fine on a full-size computer screen through the "Kindle for PC" application. For diagrams to display properly on the monochrome Kindles, however, they need redrawing with heavier line-weights -- an impossible ask for a publisher with a technical book already in print and containing thousands of images.

Douglas Self is the grand master of audio engineering. In the best British tradition, his focus is on the engineering: performance, reliability, safety. This is a refreshing change from much of the audio industry, where outlandish ideas yield vastly overpriced exotica whose performance is so mind-bogglingly awful the shortcomings are apparent not only on the test bench, but plainly audible in the lounge room.

While giving an encyclopaedic coverage of amplifier configurations, the greatest space in the book is devoted to optimization of what the author charmingly calls the "Blameless Amplifier," with a differential input stage, a voltage-gain stage with dominant-pole compensation, and a unity-gain, current-amplifying output. Common sense and practical experience shine through in every aspect of the text. The book contains many memorable quotes, such as this dismissal of the alleged strange properties of speaker cables: "Anyone prepared to believe this nonsense will not be capable of designing amplifiers, so there seems no point in further comment."

Perhaps the only criticism of the content is not so much a reflection the author, as a sad comment on modern life. It is the scant attention he gives to the only two truly radical advances in amplifier design since the industry settled on the 3-stage Class-B configuration with single, dominant-pole compensation. These are the feed-forward error correction used in Peter Walker's iconic Quad 405, and the NDFL technique invented by Edward Cherry back in the 1980s. NDFL, in a practical design with only a handful of extra components compared with a conventional circuit, reduces distortion across the audio bandwidth to a few parts per million, smashing previous records by at least an order of magnitude. The key insight in NDFL is that the requirement for stability of a gain-block is not that its open-loop gain falls at 20 dB per decade as in Bode theory, but rather that the DIFFERENCE between the open- and closed-loop gains falls at this rate. Nesting several loops that meet this more specific criterion allows large increases in feedback without compromising stability or requiring exotic devices. The sad aspect is that our most respected senior audio engineer has "never found the time" to investigate this revolutionary development.

In view of some of the comments from other reviewers, we should clarify the intended readership of this book. It is NOT for beginners. It assumes that the reader is fully familiar with basic circuit theory and the properties of common active devices. If you have fond memories of building radios or stereo gear from kits, or were a keen reader of electronics magazines, this book is for you. Radio amateurs, computer engineers and those with experience in other areas of electronics will find it the perfect way to get their head around the intricacies of audio power amplifier design.

Many would no doubt describe this work as a "reference book." It is not. It is the kind of book you read through, cover to cover, reflecting on your own experience and enjoying the insights given by a wise engineer who looks back on half a century of developments in electronics.

great book to learn how to have THD below 0.005% in power amps
By Berkeley
This book was very informative for me to understated power amp topologies and ways to reduce distortion. I am hobbyist with who studied EE in college, but I am not involved in circuit design at work.

One of autos' goals in this book is to show how to isolate each source of distortion so that it can be studied (and hopefully reduced) with a minimum of confusion and perplexity.

The 7 kinds of distortion of class B amps are discussed with graphs and schematics. Amplifier topologies reviewed from simple to more complex.

Most schematics in the book are based on bipolar transistors. No opamps are discussed and FETs discussed in one chapter.

The author provides good bibliography after every chapter so you can read actual research papers.

After reading this book i was able to understand schematics of my power amplifier, receiver and headphone amps :)

A Must-Have for the bookcase.
By Catraeus
Doug Self is to Amplifier design what Jack Nicholson is to Movies ... a consummate expert. This latest edition grows subject areas and fills in details in a very satisfying way. I am pleased that he takes fewer basic details for granted. I am still looking for a quick-reference, which his website did provide; furthermore, being an anti-subjectivist myself, I do wish he'd leave that matter behind entirely. Altogether, though, this is a foundational text on the subject which fully enables anyone skilled in the art to go from competence to mastery. He provides a very complete reference list enabling any depth of historic or esoteric follow-on research. It will be a daunting tome for someone just starting, well worth the effort. Even the hobbyist, merely curious, or non-technically adept will find insight to be used in purchasing or kit-building.
