In this inspirational and highly informative live lecture presented to a group of chiropractic professionals, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer offers his penetrating wit and wisdom on how to develop your own healing powers, as well as that of others.

Dr. Dyer emphasizes that the secrets to healing are not somewhere “out there,” but rather, healing is something that takes place inside each and every one of us, occurring when we “connect to our Source and bring Spirit to the disease.” He emphasizes that healers need to be able to banish doubt and see their clients as individuals who already possess the capacity to heal themselves. That is, those with health challenges need to have someone in their energy field who truly believes that healing can take place.

Dr. Dyer explains how to operate at that higher level where doubt and ego consciousness don’t exist; and he also relates fascinating stories based on his own personal life; interactions with kahunas, yogis, and other powerful individuals; and the world of spirituality and alternative healing.

Evolution: The Story of Life on Earth, by Jay Hosler

An accessible graphic introduction to evolution for the most science-phobic reader

Illustrated by the brilliant duo Kevin Cannon and Zander Cannon, this volume is written by the noted comic author and professor of biology Jay Hosler. Evolution features the same characters introduced in the highly regarded The Stuff of Life: A Graphic Guide to Genetics and DNA, now here to explain the fundamentals of the evolution of life on earth. On the heels of explaining to his planetary leader the intricacies of human genetics in The Stuff of Life, the intrepid alien scientist Bloort-183 is charged in this sequel with covering the wider story of evolution. Using the same storytelling conceit that Plenty magazine declared "so charming that you won't even notice you've absorbed an entire scientific field" and that caused Seed to pick The Stuff of Life as a best book of 2008, Evolution brilliantly answers Wired's demand, "What's the solution to America's crisis in science education? More comic books!"

Evolution, the most accessible graphic work on this universally studied subject, takes the reader from earth's primordial soup to the vestigial structures, like the coccyx and the male nipple, of modern humans. Once again, the award-winning illustrations of the Cannons render the complex clear and everything cleverly comedic. And in Hosler, Evolution has an award-winning biology teacher whose science comics have earned him a National Science Foundation grant and an interview on NPR's Morning Edition.

From Publishers Weekly
Featuring the same amusing characters as those found in Mark Schultz's The Stuff of Life: A Graphic Guide to Genetics and DNA, Hosler's sequel does for natural selection what its predecessor did for human genetics. The intrepid Glargalian scientist, Bloort 183, has returned and serves as the book's principal narrator. This time he has invited King Floorsh 727 and Prince Floorsh 418 on a tour of the newly opened Glargalian Holographic Museum of Earth Evolution. Hosler (Clan Apis; Sandwalk Adventures) is also a professor of biology and provides readers with much more than a simple graphic primer on evolution. With the Cannons' wonderful illustrations providing a visual anchor, Hosler discusses everything from the atomic to the planetary, from endosymbiosis to mass extinction. The book, like its predecessor, may be too dense with information--for instance, the 54 million years of the Cambrian period is covered in a mere six panels. However, readers should find at the end of their journey through Bloort's Holographic Museum that they've learned a tremendous amount about earth's evolution, and have had more than their fair share of amusement in doing so. Back to the watery world of the sea-cucumber-like species Squinch for another course in the elements of life on earth. In The Stuff of Life (2009), Squinch scientist Bloort 183 convinced King Floorsh 727, by explaining genetics, that becoming sexual may be how the asexual Squinch can avoid impending extinction. Now he continues the exposition by disclosing the wonders wrought by genetics plus time. For this lesson, the king is joined by the heir apparent, precocious little Prince Floorsh 418, whose good questions and inspired intuitions keep Bloort on his . . . are they tentacles? It’s hard to imagine instructional science cartooning better than this. The Cannons (who are unrelated, by the way) keep every creature they’re called upon to depict—be it cell, dinosaur, dodo, or Darwin—perky but never ridiculous, and Hosler, like Mark Schultz in Stuff, balances science and humor superbly. Complete with glossary, this delightful book seems ideal for nonscientists who want to entertainingly brush up their knowledge of evolution as well as for students from middle school on up. --Ray Olson

Review

“It is not often that the books I am asked to review go missing. After hours of searching, I found the errant item, with the spine cracked, in my teenage son's room--an otherwise book-free zone. I can offer no higher recommendation . . . I am not sure why comic books make words like alpha-proteobacteria less daunting, but they do. Every classroom should have this book.” ―New Scientist

“Written by a nonalien biologist and illustrated by a talented (and nonrelated) duo in cartoon format, this book is funny, fun, and authoritative, and includes talking mitochondria and a charming song-and-dance routine by a male bowerbird seeking to be sexually selected.” ―Dolly Setton, Natural History Magazine

“The most accessible graphic work on this universally studied subject.” ―Ian Paulsen, The Guardian blog

“It's hard to imagine instructional science cartooning better than this.” ―Booklist

“If you like comics, you'll like this book. If you're interested in evolution, you'll like it even better. It's got a lot of information presented with a lot of fun. Ideal for high school and college students and teachers, and anyone who wants to enjoy the story of evolution.” ―Kevin Padian, President, National Center for Science Education

“From obsequious extraterrestrials to s'mores-eating early humans, this serious comic book manages to be fun and entertaining as well as accurate. (Maybe not about ancestral marshmallows, but readers will sort out the humor and snark from the science!) The story of evolution on Earth has rarely been presented in quite so entertaining a manner.” ―Eugenie C. Scott, Executive Director, National Center for Science Education

“Biology is a dynamic subject and I am always looking for new ways to reach my teenage students. Evolution was an excellent way to reinforce the concepts we cover in class. The graphic novel was written and illustrated in such a way that automatically grabbed the students' interest. Students learn best when they are having fun in the midst of it. This entertaining and engaging book makes learning enjoyable.” ―Bertha Vasquez, biology teacher, G.W. Carver Middle School, Miami, FL

Witty, engaging, and educational.
By Saganite
Using the same framing device as The Stuff of Life: A Graphic Guide to Genetics and DNA (aliens discuss the subject, giving an "outsider's" perspective and an excuse for lots of explanation and examples), "Evolution" depicts the theory using historical snippets, wise and wonderful illustrations, and cutting-edge information. While the target audience might be the 10- to 16-year-old set, this middle-aged man, well-versed in evolutionary science basics, found a lot to love in this book. For one thing, it's just super-cute a lot of the time. And while technically I didn't learn anything really new in it, seeing ideas I already grasped presented in fresh, captivating ways makes them feel new again.

I suppose that's what "Evolution" does for me. If books like this existed when I was a kid, I didn't know about them, and I spent benighted decades preferring magical answers to actual science. This book, with its great information and frankly kind of juvenile presentation, helps make me feel more like a kid again, making old discoveries for a first time. That's some real magic.

A good read for children
By Supernova
It's a comic book explaining how evolution works, in a story that will intrigue children while teaching them. An excerpt from the book can be seen in this Scientific American article: [...]

Engaging, funny, informative
By Anonymous
This is a great book for anyone who is interested in learning more about how the world around them works, but is daunted (or bored) by the more traditional textbooks of the classroom. Through its narrative framework and captivating illustrations, this book makes the more technical, elusive details of biological processes and evolutionary mechanisms relatable, imaginable, and ultimately knowable. It's packed with information but fun to read. Definitely worth it.

The Fishermen: A Novel, by Chigozie Obioma

In a Nigerian town in the mid 1990's, four brothers encounter a madman whose mystic prophecy of violence threatens the core of their close-knit family.

Told from the point of view of nine year old Benjamin, the youngest of four brothers, THE FISHERMEN is the Cain and Abel-esque story of an unforgettable childhood in 1990's Nigeria, in the small town of Akure. When their strict father has to travel to a distant city for work, the brothers take advantage of his extended absence to skip school and go fishing. At the ominous, forbidden nearby river, they meet a dangerous local madman who persuades the oldest of the boys that he is destined to be killed by one of his siblings.

What happens next is an almost mythic event whose impact-both tragic and redemptive-will transcend the lives and imaginations of its characters and its readers. Dazzling and viscerally powerful, The Fishermen never leaves Akure but the story it tells has enormous universal appeal. Seen through the prism of one family's destiny, this is an essential novel about Africa with all of its contradictions-economic, political, and religious-and the epic beauty of its own culture.

With this bold debut, Chigozie Obioma emerges as one of the most original new voices of modern African literature, echoing its older generation's masterful storytelling with a contemporary fearlessness and purpose.

Longlisted for the 2016 International Dylan Thomas Prize

Longlisted for the 2015 Etisalat Prize for Literature

Named a Best Book of the Year on more than a dozen lists, including the New York Times Book Review, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and NPR

"Entrancing.... Its rising tension and poetic grace make this one of the finest novels to come from Africa in years."--Wall Street Journal "Best Books of 2015"

"In its exploration of the murderous and the mysterious, the mind's terrors and a vibrant Africa, this debut novel is heir to Chinua Achebe."--New York Times Book Review, Editors' Choice

"Engrossing.... [Obioma's] language is rich and hypnotic, and nearly every page is filled with an unexpected and perfectly rendered description.... This is a dark and beautiful book by a writer with seemingly endless promise."--Michael Schaub, NPR

"The most frustrating thing about THE FISHERMEN is that the author has no other books for the reader to devour once the final page is reached."--Trine Tsouderos, Chicago Tribune

"[A] darkly mythic first novel [that] feels as if it might predate modernity itself.... It's hard to know where Obioma...can go with his literary career after this pitiless, unstinting start.... Perhaps he will become a kind of African Cormac McCarthy, committed to a stark vision of life in which our pretensions to civilization are forever held up and exposed as skin deep: that what really runs us is deeper down, in the blood."--Kevin Nance, USA Today (3/4 stars)

"A striking, controlled and masterfully taut debut.... The tale has a timeless quality that renders it almost allegorical and it is the more powerful for it."--Financial Times

"Part Bildungsroman, part Greek tragedy, THE FISHERMEN may be the most interesting debut novel to emerge from Nigeria this year.... In a first novel full of deceptive simplicity, lyrical language and playful Igbo mythology and humour, [Obioma] uses the madman's apocalyptic vision for the family as a way of conjuring up Nigeria's senseless body politic. Even a child can tell that this is no way to run a country. And yet for Benjamin, a narrator caught up in tragedy, there is also redemption. This is an impressive and beautifully imagined work."--The Economist

"Frank and lyrical."--New Yorker

"Arresting.... Obioma brings terrific authorial dexterity to the family's story and its small place in Nigeria, and evokes a worldview which brings with it a terrible tragedy. This is the best novel I have read so far this year, and that, I can assure you, is saying plenty."--Kathrine A. Powers, Christian Science Monitor

"Inspired by his native Nigeria and, by extension, the contradictions and marvels of Africa, Obioma is an articulate and sometimes lyrical storyteller.... A dynamic new voice from Africa--and one that deserves a listen."--Ofeibea Quist-Arcton, NPR's Best Books of 2015

"This year's most promising African newcomer may well prove to be Chigozie Obioma.... In his exploration of the mysterious and the murderous, of the terrors that can take hold of the human mind, of the colors of life in Africa, with its vibrant fabrics and its trees laden with fruit, and most of all in his ability to create dramatic tension in this most human of African stories, Chigozie Obioma truly is the heir to Chinua Achebe."--Fiametta Rocco, New York Times, "100 Notable Books of 2015"

"Awesome in the true sense of the word: crackling with life, freighted with death, vertiginous both in its style and in the elemental power of its story. Few novels deserve to be called 'mythic,' but Chigozie Obioma's THE FISHERMEN is certainly one of them. A truly magnificent debut."--Eleanor Catton, author of The Luminaries (Man Booker Prize)

"This strange, imaginative debut probes the nature of belief and the power of family bonds."--Christine Emba, New Criterion

"This promising debut spins a simple, almost mythological conceit into a heartbreaking elegy to Nigeria's lost promise."--Helon Habila, Guardian

"Obioma writes with gorgeous restraint reminiscent of the intricate prose in a Tolstoy novella. Every sentence delivers a precise and heartfelt blow. Hardly anyone writing today is delivering this level of intricacy, lyricism and control. Add to that, the urgency and importance of his message. It just doesn't get better than this. Get used to the name: Obioma is here to stay."--Alexandra Fuller, author of Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness

"An evocative fable-like tale."--The Week

"A strikingly accomplished debut, hailing Chigozie Obioma as a bold new voice in Nigerian fiction."--Lucy Scholes, Independent

"Should I call Obioma the next Bulawayo? Adichie or Achebe? He could be called all of these things, but THE FISHERMEN is also none of these things. It is a novel that is all its own.... [That] remind[s] me of why I love reading: to be shown what it might be like inside another culture; to slip between someone else's ears; to feel a life that I won't get to live."--Claire Cameron, The Millions

"Obioma's remarkable fiction is at once urgently, vividly immediate, yet simultaneously charged with the elemental power of myth."--Peter Ho Davies, author of The Welsh Girl

"Grips readers from the very first chapter."--Caroline Hallemann, Travel & Leisure

"THE FISHERMEN establishes Obioma as a writer to be taken seriously.... Ingenious, subtle, ambitious and intriguing."--Stuart Kelly, Times Literary Supplement

"Unforgettable.... There is something almost mystical about Obioma's writing as well as his story, and it makes this book nearly impossible to put down."--Vol. 1 Brooklyn

"Folklore-infused."--Megan O'Grady, Vogue

"[A] deeply imaginative, stirring debut novel.... For those interested in a gripping, at times nail-biting, read, give this new author a try."--Coastal Living

"Seamlessly interweaving the everyday and the elemental, Obioma's strange, imaginative debut probes the nature of belief and the power of family bonds.... Obioma excels at juxtaposing sharp observation, rich images of the natural world, and motifs from biblical and tribal lore; his novel succeeds as a convincing modern narrative and as a majestic reimagining of timeless folklore."--Publishers Weekly, (Starred Review)

"Elegantly near-mythic.... Made vivid by the well-rendered specifics, Obioma's quietly unfolding story of family tragedy gathers strength as its cycle of violence spins faster and faster."--Barbara Hoffert, Library Journal

"The talented Obioma exhibits a richly nuanced understanding of culture and character.... A powerful, haunting tale of grief, healing, and sibling loyalty."--Kirkus Reviews

"[A] striking debut."--BookPage

"Chigozie Obioma's gift and the authenticity of his voice are immediately apparent. What makes the narrative of THE FISHERMEN so striking and seductive is that it broaches magic realism yet stays entirely, and convincingly, in the realm of real life. Magic believed in is stark reality. One finds oneself in full suspension of disbelief that old legends and myths persist in perpetual reincarnation in present-day lives so that every character, scenes, and imagery jump off the page, firmly to lodge in the reader's mind."--Irini Spanidou, author of Before

"I find the author Chigozie Obioma formidably articulate and with great talent. I believe that he has it in him to become one of the best writers of the upcoming crop of young African authors."--Nuruddin Farah, author of Maps and Hiding in Plain Sight

A story about stories
By Trilbe Wynne
I read a lot but I don't write many reviews because, in most cases, other reviewers have already said everything that I would say. With The Fishermen, though, I want to point out that this novel isn't just about Nigeria. This novel provides smart narrative insight into the way that stories affect human lives. The novel, which is set in Nigeria in the 1990s, revolves around a Nigerian family (and the story is also an allegory of Nigeria's political history) but the implications in this novel can be seen in human dynamics anywhere in the world and at any time in history. The narrative is specific but the themes are universal.

The truth is, stories affect us. We become invested in the stories we're told and our investment comes with consequences. The Fisherman brings this truth to light through a vibrant, compelling narrative. At times, I felt sorry for the brothers in this story or I was angry at them. At other times, I was happy for them or hopeful. What's important to me is that, from beginning to end, I always felt something. The Fishermen explored several profound philosophical themes, but the author didn't neglect the characters or sacrifice the basic narrative while looking more deeply into the human condition.

I try to read literary fiction more often than popular fiction because I'm human, so I'm always looking for intellectual growth. Unfortunately, a lot of contemporary literary fiction is more concerned with deploying literary themes than with crafting a strong and compelling narrative. The Fishermen is a wonderful work that doesn't sacrifice entertainment while giving the reader enlightenment. Honestly, I'm awed by Obioma's ability to entertain me and keep me enthralled in the story, while simultaneously giving me philosophical food for thought. The novel is also beautifully written, with language that is poetic without being pretentious. I bought this book for myself on Amazon, but it feels like a gift.

Very sad but worth the read.

I grew up in Akure, although a few years older, and on the other side of town from Chigozie. It is so great to read a very lively and well-told story about that idyllic and quiet town. Most of the events Chigozie refers to are true. They actually brought many memories of my childhood back to me and the nostalgia made me call up old friends and family while I was reading the book. The story itself is a lot to take in. It is very surprising and quite painful, but don't be afraid, Chigozie with his mastery of language and patience with delivery helps you to work through it in stages. The theme, that our greatest fears usually come upon us, not because those fears are powerful in and of themselves, but because we give them power by focusing on them, is a great lesson for everyone - regardless of your origin, gender, or upbringing. This is a great book!

Very Interesting
By Amazon Customer
The Fishermen was set in the 1990s in Nigeria written by Chigozie Obioma. The book was told in the perspective of Benjamin, the youngest of the four brothers. Ben recounts memories with his other three brothers, Ikenna, Boja, and Obembe, along with his other family members and those apart of the Akure community. Conflict beings when their father moves to a far city for work, so he is no longer a big impact in their lives. Ikenna then assumes the role as the leader of the family because the father is gone. They begin cutting class to fish at the long forbidden river, Omi-Ala. As they were fishing one day, they come across the known madman of Abulu, who continues to call for Ikenna. (SPOILER ALERT!!!) Abulu prophesies that Ikenna will be killed by a fishermen, and Ikenna assumes it will be one of his brothers. From then, Ikenna distances himself from his whole family, leading to a break in the whole family. The family falls apart of the mother attempts to connect them all by turning to prayer and having father reprimand them. As tension heightens, Ikenna is killed, and Boja dies. And nothing can bring this family together again. The book has a dramatic ending with Ben recounting all the one year’s worth of events in court.
In my opinion, I really liked the book. The whole book was very coherent and descriptive. Also, I liked the whole theme behind the book, which was community and family connection. This whole book is an allegory for what was happening in Nigeria at the time. Obioma was very descriptive throughout the whole book in each scenario. He portrayed the lives of the people in Nigeria at this time really well. Also, the ending was very captivating in that the whole book was just Ben recalling the past year to a jury. And this whole story took place within a year. This book relates to In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. Both Alvarez and Obioma described families struggling within a country. However, in In the Time of the Butterflies, Alvarez writes about the Mirabal sisters and their oppression in the Dominican Republic while Obioma writes about a family that was once really close lose all connections. But they both expose the life of families in a specific country during the time.
This book has an really interesting plot. Not only that, but it is also super relatable. Anyone will be able to connect with at least one character in the story. There was continuous action, and something new or some conflict always occurred, keeping readers attached and not wanting to put the book down. However, the whole book seemed very climactic, consistently building up the book, but it took away from the realism from the actual story. Also, some of the book was predictable because Obioma foreshadows a lot, but this was also a positive for the book as Obioma executed this really well. Another good thing about the book is that is was really easy and simple to read even though it had a deeper meaning behind it. Having some background information about Nigeria at the time will also make it easier to connect to the book. So therefore, this book is recommended for everyone to read because it is interesting overall.

The Roman Noir in Post-War French Culture: Dark Fictions (Oxford Studies in Modern European Culture), by Claire Gorrara

Thrilling, absorbing, and full of bizarre plot twists and motivations, the roman noir is crime fiction at its most exciting. In this lively introduction to the post-war French roman noir, Claire Gorrara challenges preconceptions about the roman noir as little more than a populist form of crime fiction and examines how selected writers have appropriated it as a critical response to formative concerns and debates in post-war French society.

The system for publishing academic books is broken...
By David Chute
...when a 144 page treatise is priced this high. Who on earth is served by this system? Certainly not the author, who can expect a handful of copies to be sold to a few research libraries, Certainly not actual readers or students of pop culture, especially if they don't happen to be within borrowing distance of one of those august institutions. At best this is a notional book. It will be accessible to so few people that it might as well not exist at all.

Informative and comprehensive handbook
By Berardo Mascioli
Provides a good overview of the decision making process for developing business and industrial parks with some excellent case studies covering the economic analysis for initiating new construction.

Only reason I did not provide a fifth star was that the material is now about 10 years out of date, and it requires some re-working to incorporate changes to the industry since the 2007/08 recession and trends in the current market-place.

Excellent, but data needs update
By Michael JJ
Overall the book was excellent, but the data is only relevant to 2000. Most of the data needs update after the 2008 crisise. But at least if you are interested in business park development, this book gives you a solid start.

If someone asked, "Are you a fan of Jesus?", how would you answer? You attend every movie featuring a certain actor, you know the stats of your sports hero, and you can recite lyrics from your favorite songs. In short, you're a huge fan. But are you treating Jesus the same as the other people you admire? The truth is Jesus wants more than the church attendance, occasional prayer, and the ability to recite Scripture—the fan response. He's looking for people who are actually willing to sacrifice in order to follow him. In this student edition of Not a Fan, Kyle Idleman uses humor, personal stories, and biblical truth as he challenges you to look at what it means to call yourself a Christian and follow the radical call Jesus presents. So, will you be a fan, or a follower?

The author Kyle Idleman is a wonderful story teller and truth presenter. He provides a clear picture of what it means to truly follow Jesus, not just be a fan. His analogies and humor are mixed together well and at appropriate places. Adults and teens want to keep reading and be challenged to apply. His daily journal "Not A Fan Follower's Journal" is a wonderful book to go through too.
