About the Author
Claire Gorrara is Senior Lecturer in French at Cardiff University. She is author of French Women's Writing and the Occupation in Post-1968 France (Macmillan, 1998) and co-editor of European Memories of the Second World War (Berghahn, 1998) and France Since the Revolution: Texts and Contexts (Arnold, forthcoming 2003).

The system for publishing academic books is broken...

...when a 144 page treatise is priced this high. Who on earth is served by this system? Certainly not the author, who can expect a handful of copies to be sold to a few research libraries, Certainly not actual readers or students of pop culture, especially if they don't happen to be within borrowing distance of one of those august institutions. At best this is a notional book. It will be accessible to so few people that it might as well not exist at all.
