About the Author
Sir Terence Rattigan was one of the most popular English 20th-century dramatists. Reading the play was okay

I'm glad I got the original version of this drama on paper to read. I don't know how much it helped me understand the play or rather the two movie versions. But "The Winslow Boy" in either version on film is really a great play. A courtroom drama without ever going into the courtroom ... also a wonderful insight into an historical event at a different level. My favorite is the Mamet film, BTW.

I liked the play itself, but I especially liked three editorial contributions: 1) a description of the real-life events from which the play derives, 2) a history of the various productions and adaptations of the play, and 3) a discussion of Rattigan's place in English drama.

Great illustrated guide for older children

Not only a great childrens book but also one of the best books written by grandmaster Raymond Keene (who has written more than 100). He seems to have picked the eyes out of the best of his previous works and summarised them in an easy to understand guide that appeals to kids and adult beginners.

As the other reviewer says its many many illustrations are terrific and designed to catch the eye encouraging kids (and adults)to read on. Almost every page has at least one picture or chess board shot.

It starts with an interesting history of the game and ends with biographies of world champions, discussion of computer chess and resources for further learning about chess. In between it covers the basics of pieces and how they move, and has quite comprehensive sectiions on openings, the middlegame, and endgame/checkmates.

It goes into detail that is a welcome surprise for a childrens guide. For example he covers the "more difficult" checkmate by knight and bishop briefly in an easy to understand illustrated way when adult books on checkmate endings written by so called experts avoid discussing at all! So Ray Keene really know what he is talking about and explains it simply and well.

As well as the many illustrations, there are plenty of summary boxes, and quizzes with answers at each step of the book. There are also several complete classic games which are used to explain key concepts. This makes learning easy and it proceeds in simple steps from basic to progressively more complex concepts.

The edition I have is from the 1980s which you might think makes it out of date. But for a beginner to intermediate it is still one of the best books to learn from particularly for children. I rate this as a classic childrens chess book which will be hard to equal. (A worthy and up to date competitor is the Usborne Complete Internet Chess Book (see my review)). This book by Ray Keene is more suitable for older children as it is more wordy and goes into more detail for more difficult concepts (eg the bishop and knight checkmate mentioned above)

In short a great book. You may need to buy it second hand or search the net for a copy as it may not be readily available. But it will be well worth the effort to get it and enjoy every page.

Defending My Teaching

As an early childhood educator, I sometimes feel like I am lost in nowadays test driven, textbook and worksheet based curriculums in NYC public schools. It's books like this that make me continue to believe in the importance and effectiveness of child centered teaching and give me the confidence to defend my practices, my students in my classrooms.

Gets to the honest essence of the angler in all of us

Something that struck me in this book was the brutal honesty of the day's log. I wonder how many times we've had a wonderful day on the stream but have the sum of the log read "caught one 8" brownie". The honesty extended deep in to the book and into Keiths's personal life that was extremely refreshing, especially in these days where truth seems to be in rare commodity. We cast our own bamboo rod (and justified why) right along with Keith as he explores and tries to find himself in the act of flyfishing. The early Kindle release is re-pleat with annoying typos and missing words but that did not distract and only confirmed Keith as a kindred human soul. Keith is the kind of guy you would want to spend the day on the creek with and a nice cool one in town afterwards. A good read that I enjoyed. Thanks Keith, if ever in Colorado, I'll show you around.

Great read / Inspirational and Informative

Like many anglers I find my time on the water helps me focus, relax and look inward, and in many ways reading this book took me streamside. Like I was along for the ride with Keith on one of his fishing adventures. Keith's passion for fishing is clear and the openness in which he shares and relates his life experiences makes for a compelling adventure for the reader. Recommended for any fan of the outdoors and fishing, but also for those who are sensitive, introspective, and spiritual.

A Journey and Some Good Lessons

A really good fisherman's read, full of personal experiences and wise counsel regarding the way of the trout. Lessons through someone else's eyes are not always rewarding, but these were. I really enjoyed their lessons as well as the author's style. I am glad I went for the ride.
