About the Author

Douglas Alger is a team leader of the Data Center Infrastructure team at Cisco Systems®, where he helps design, support, and manage the company’s worldwide data centers. He has participated in more than 50 major data center projects, involving new construction or comprehensive infrastructure upgrades.

 

Doug joined Cisco® in 1997. His prior career was as a newspaper reporter, where he wrote for several newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times. He has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from San Jose State University.

A fantastic resource for those who build data centers

When I was tasked with designing and overseeing the construction my company's new data center, the first thing I did was a deep research dive - and while there is lots of information on the subject available on the internet, this book was probably the single most helpful resource I relied upon during our build-out. Although it is beginning to get a bit dated, almost all of the recommendations and suggested policies / procedures make sound sense today, and it helped me to avoid many easy-to-make mistakes. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is responsible for data center design, construction, or even maintaining servers outside of a data center - the ideas in this book can be applied to many situations outside of the data center, and helped to make me a more critical and careful system administrator.

About the Author

Fred E. Jandt was born of second-generation German immigrants in the multicultural south-central region of Texas. After graduating from Texas Lutheran University and Stephen F. Austin State University, he received his doctorate in communication from Bowling Green State University. He has taught and been a student of intercultural communication for more than 40 years, developing his experience through travel and international training and research projects. While Professor of Communication at The College at Brockport, State University of New York, his reputation as a teacher led to his appointment as SUNY’s first director of faculty development. He has retired as Dean of the Palm Desert Campus and Professor of Communication at California State University, San Bernardino, where he was named Outstanding Professor. He has also been a visiting professor at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. He has extensive experience in the areas of intercultural and international communication, negotiation mediation, and conflict management. He was one of the first scholars to introduce the study of conflict to the communication discipline with his text Conflict Resolution Through Communication (Harper & Row, 1973). He has subsequently published many other titles in this area, including the successful trade books Win-Win Negotiating: Turning Conflict Into Agreement (Wiley, 1985), which has been translated into eight languages, and a casebook on international conflict management, Constructive Conflict Management: Asia-Pacific Cases (SAGE, 1996) with Paul B. Pedersen. For several years, he conducted the training workshop “Managing Conflict Productively” for major corporations and government agencies throughout the United States. Jandt continues to train volunteers who are learning to become mediators in the California justice system.

[NOT YOUNG ADULT] What could have been a great story, shot down by unlikable characters, dubious consent concerns, and worse.

I need to say right up front: This book is marketed as "Young Adult", and it is anything BUT. The category is defined by the themes contained within the story. Just because your main characters are all about 17-year olds, that doesn't make you a YA book. YA and I are so close we're practically family. This book was like a stranger at the dinner table.

I actually interrupted another book to read this one, and I'm still not sure why. It's not even in my normal genre preference. I just remember reading the summary, seeing the cover, and thinking "I'd like to read that." Ella Harper was an interesting main character, full of spirit, and she led her story well. The writing was even pretty decent for the first 2/3rd of the book.

Call me old-fashioned, when we decide "attempted date rape" is the best catalyst for getting the two leads to hook up, the story stops being enjoyable. Now, the male lead, Reed Royal, did not actually attempt the date rape, but when Ella is drugged and the Royal brothers save her, how is the natural conclusion "Someone is gonna need to 'help' her with her drug-induced horniness." Sorry, what? WHAT? So maybe Reed Royal didn't attempt the date rape, but he's 1000000% guilty of engaging in dubious consent.

"I feel like I'm taking advantage of you."

Yes, Reed, because you are! Ella is high on a date-rape cocktail, and you're like "Well, but she said she was okay with me 'helping' her, so..." This isn't even the only incident like this in the story. At one point Reed actually *propositions* her while they're out yachting, saying that she's a dirty whore but he'll take care of her sexual needs as long as she doesn't touch the rest of his family. Ella's second morning in the household, two of her new "brothers" joke about raping her. To Ella's credit, she does point out to the readers "Sexual assault isn't about getting laid. It's about power.", indicating they don't need to use sex to have power over her.

Ella's actually very good about playing it smart. It's something that made her extremely likeable as a character. (Up until sex was involved, and suddenly she can't think at all.) She knows a handsome face doesn't make someone a good person. Ella gets the difference between what her body wants and what her mind wants. She knows the value of education as a means to rise above poor circumstances. Ella Harper has lots of qualities that make her a great main character.

Remember when I said the writing was good for the first 2/3rds of the book and was not Young Adult? The last third of this book read like a smutty magazine you'd find under a mattress. Nevermind that Ella was smart and self-sufficient. Once she and Reed hook up, it's like sex-sex-sex all the time on her brain. She can barely look at Reed without wanting to get busy with him, and the book goes into GRAPHIC detail about their sexual encounters. Look, bedroom doors were invented for a reason. These are 17-year olds. I don't need to hear all the gory details of whose fingers are going where. ...I'm gonna say it again for good measure: SEVENTEEN-YEAR OLDS.

It's a shame that I power read through the first 2/3 so quickly because the story was engaging, yet it's the uglier remaining third that's leaving such an imprint on my mind. The first part of the book actually had a good premise, familiar but solid. Poor girl with nothing gets plucked from obscurity into a life of riches. I didn't even take issue with the idea that she was stripping when we first meet her, because she's doing it to survive. Can't fault someone for surviving, and she's smart about her work, putting her safety and schooling first. I actually had to pause around page 55 and split a side from laughing. "Four boys who rule the school, and their decree sets the law for how poor-girl Ella will be treated." I've seen this premise before, and lemme tell ya, I LOVE Hana Yori Dango. Downside? The boys in HYD weren't such *complete* a-holes, unlike the Royals, and they actually learned and grew from their experiences in the story. The only redeemable character in this bunch is Easton. He's the only one that makes up for his initial behavior and makes an attempt to be better with Ella. I see so many reviews for this story chittering on about how great all the boys are and I'm like "...Seriously?" Either their standards for men are terrible, or mine are too high. Maybe both? Easton was sweet, Gideon was neutral, and the other three were like "Please go to other side of your mansion house and never interact with Ella again, thank you."

There was ONE saving grace of the distasteful sexual content that I feel warrants a shout out. Mean Girl Savannah, one of Ella's arch nemeses, takes the time to warn her of her potential date rapist (albiet too cryptically for Ella to get it). "Look, I don't like you much, but I wouldn't let even my worst enemy be sucked in by him." She put aside all her issues with Ella to warn her. I 100% support girls looking out for other girls. More of this in the book and less of the boot knocking, and this might have been the story I hoped it was going to be.

I debated with myself at some length whether to round up or down for my site rating. The book was a solid 2.5 stars for me. The book had plenty of enjoyable material (round up), but it also had some really sketchy content (round down). Ultimately I had to ask myself "How much do I want other people reading this story? So I'm rounding down. I hate the idea of a young impressionable girl looking for a proper Young Adult book to find this one instead. Hell, I wouldn't even want a young boy to read this and get any ideas. I feel it's almost my responsibility to do what I can to discourage them both.

Good read but...

I thought this book was a good read. It has good character development, a fast moving plot, and definitely interesting characters. I liked the main character. She was strong, she wasn't perfect and she was insightful regarding how she could be influenced by her history. In fact, I liked that she was aware of her own trauma. The author definitely should have addressed this trauma more, however. It's traumatic for a 15 year old to be taking care of her sick, dying mother, to be working two jobs, to have a history of family violence (or attempted anyway), to have to deal with seeing the aftermath of domestic violence on your mom (before she was sick), to have her mother die, and to be an underage stripper on top of all of that? This brings me to my next question...How was CPS NOT called?? Oh and while we're at it, who in their right mind would believe that a 17 year old is the 35 years that a driver's license states? Nobody. Because even with a boatload of makeup on, you would look too young. But whatever. I can "suspend my disbelief".

I'm not a big fan of the amount of violence and sexual violence that happens in this book. And then to have our girl FALLING for that? I did like that she recognized how screwed up that was...but still! It just...sits wrong with me. But then maybe, because of her past, this is what she's looking for. I did like that this bad boy didn't do a complete turn around. That's wonderful, actually. I mean, we get to see what motivates him (the trauma of losing his own mother--a lot of dead mother's in this book now that I think about it) but he makes no apologies. He just sort of..warms up to our girl.

All in all I'd give it a 3.something. There were flaws but I believe that's the point of it all. Just didn't care for the violence, the dating violence, and the sexual violence.

OH. MY. GOSH.

WOW! I put this book on the back burner for a while because the synopsis just didn't grab my attention, but it had decent reviews so I put it on my wish list and waited. I finally purchased it and read the entire book in one day. I was sucked in! The plot is phenomenal!! It's so much more than a rags to riches story. The characters are so complex and well developed - they each have their own flavor and stand out independently. Ella is a spit fire! I loved her right away. Her devotion to her mother and to herself (getting a good education, supporting herself alone) makes her one of the most likable characters I've read in a long time. Her relationships with the Royal family seemed so real - I could believe that their relationships were based on real life, even though they're completely fictitious. THANK THE LORD that the second book is already out because I would have been stewing in my head until it's release!! Don't be put off by some of the other reviews like I was - this book is fantastic. Well edited, well thought out, believable, lovable - I'd give it ten stars if I could!

Long time coming for a disappointing book.

Came home tonight to find this on my front porch! I have been waiting not just the last 6 months since I ordered it but since the movie came out way back in 1999.
I looked through it over dinner. Felt like something was missing. I think it was not the best idea to feature so much bad art that was done before Brad Bird came to the project. I also felt like they should have included more of the beautiful background paintings that were done for the film. Also, the color script pages were dark and unclear.
I'm a little disappointed.

I was looking forward to this book for a while - I've loved the artistic direction, color and style choices and have used them as references for years. What could be better than a book filled with storyboards, character sheets, colors, environments, etc - all from the movie? Well... that's not quite what this ended up being. The book reads as ... here's a bunch of comp art that we sorta thought was ok, well maybe it sucked - but then this new guy came around and changed the art direction - so now we'll compare what sucked to what doesn't suck - and on and on...

I would have been thrilled with seeing the final movie art direction - not all of their failed attempts before getting it right. The book is basically filled with the art that didn't make it. Can't win them all!

The Art of the Iron Giant - Book Review

The Iron Giant remains one of the most highly-regarded animated movies. It's a beautiful film, and to coincide with the release of the signature edition blu-ray set, Insight Editions has published a book equally as beautiful. The Art of the Iron Giant contains what fans have been waiting for a long time - an in-depth look behind the scenes of the film and it's art department.

The book begins with a foreword by director Brad Bird, who writes about his involvement in the project. The text then discusses the challenges of the film, with focus on the design and animation processes. The artwork in the book varies greatly -- some of it is from a previous incarnation of the film that was planned prior to Bird's involvement; and then obviously the artistic progression into the final visual style you recognize on-screen. Those who know the film will know that it has a unique look which blended a computer generated 3D-character and a traditional 2D environment.

The Iron Giant himself went through various design iterations, and it's fun to see what could have been. Many of the designs are cool-looking, but the final design also gives the character a real personality. Additional chapters show the art of the human characters, as well as the settings in the film (including Hogarth's house and the power plant). Finally, the book concludes with a look back at the legacy of the film and an appreciation of the artists involved in making it a reality. Dozens of team members recall their experiences - including storyboard artists, animators, and composer Michael Kamen.

This is one of those few books that will likely rise greatly in value over time. Mick Hume is a journalist and author. He is editor-at-large of Spiked and writes regularly on free-speech issues. He had a weekly column in ‘The Times’ for 10 years, and was described as ‘Britain’s only libertarian Marxist newspaper columnist’. More recently he has written in defence of freedom of speech and a free press in ‘The Times’, the ‘Sunday Times’, the ‘Independent’ and the ‘Sun’.

Very clever, polemic and cutting. This is an insightful book which shook up my own thinking about these issues. It marauds its way across a range of current and pertinent free speech issues and leaves the scene a healthier place for it.

Extremely timely book about the importance of free speech

This book should be required (and yes, I see the irony in that) reading for university students, college administrators, professors, self-declared activists, and others who would forcibly "improve" the world by shrill overreaction to free speech and thought. Orwell's Big Brother never dreamed thought control would be so easy. All it takes is a few delusional malcontents and a media desperate for content, no matter how trite and irrational--and no need for bayonets or jack-booted thugs! The author makes many straight-forward compelling philosophical arguments in support of free speech, supported by comically tragic anecdotes. I imagine it was difficult to chose from among the many real life incidents related to this topic. I hope that people realize the only rights that truly exist for oneself are those you're willing to endure others having as well.

As further irony, we'll have to see if this review makes it past the Amazon censors.

Attack of the Politeness Police

Once upon a time, kings and priests censoriously decided what we citizens could say and hear. Centuries of Enlightenment philosophers, religious dissidents, and civil liberties champions struggled to expand the definition of allowable discourse, calling free speech a necessary human right. But something funny happened: once the seeming libertarians achieved cultural supremacy, they began silencing others, just as they themselves had once been silenced.

Marxist journalist Mick Hume has gotten zapped by Britain’s exceptionally restrictive libel laws, so has personal connection to the consequences of un-free speech. During the Cold War, officials silenced his semi-Soviet ideology; more recently, speech police have dinged his supposed lack of multi-culti empathy. He considers both options equally chilling, as both encourage dull, conformist thinking expressed through studiously bland and unthreatening language.

Hume considers this the diametrical opposite of freedom. We’ve become pathologically fearful to face controversial ideas, to question received truths, or kill bad beliefs with facts. This isn’t just philosophical principle to Hume; he believes we’re starving the taproot of free democratic society. "The best way to counter hatreds and ideas we despise is not to try to bury them alive,” he writes, “but to drag them out into the light of day and debate them to the bitter end."

Hume considers three common areas subject to moralistic silencing: the Internet, universities, and entertainment. Many jurisdictions have passed laws against Internet “trolling,” even though no meaningful definition of trolling exists; one person’s troll is another’s non-conformist truth-teller. University speech codes have so thoroughly stymied some campuses that today’s most important issues cannot be discussed. And attempts to silence rowdy sports crowds or insurgent comedians have created potentially dangerous pushback.

Where once, the powerful and priggish tried to silence cusswords and sex to avoid rocking the boat, Anglo-American discourse has fallen into the hands of "full-time offense-takers, whose default emotional... is outrage." The motivation is almost diametrically opposite—protecting the weak rather than defending the status quo—but the effect is virtually identical. Both responses squelch debate, prevent testing and improving ideas, and encourages dimwits to think themselves martyred.

We’ve witnessed the rise of what Hume calls You-Can’t-Say-That culture, a two-pronged spear, "not only You-Can't-Say-THAT, but also YOU-Can't-Say-That." Vocal spokespersons, mostly unelected and chosen by their ability to argue stridently and write clickbait, attempt to circumscribe not only what constitutes acceptable language, but who constitutes acceptable speakers. This has, in practice, produced a narrowing of discourse that forcibly silences certain groups, while punishing True Believers for changing their minds.

But You Shouldn’t Say Damaging Or Violent Things!
Hume agrees. But he also distinguishes between words and actions. Threats of imminent, physical violence or attempts to kick-start riots aren’t speech, they’re action, and deserve treated appropriately. Jerks saying mean-spirited things aren’t acting, they’re speaking. If we silence them, their bad opinions merely fester. Better instead to rebut them publically, dragging bad arguments into the sunlight.

But People Say Hurtful Things About Minorities!
They’ve always done so; and historically, we’ve fought to ensure minorities have the opportunity to answer back. Hurt feelings, or even outright bigotry, mustn’t negate civil liberties. What more subjective criterion could possibly exist to limit speech, than one’s feelings. While actions that measurably harm minorities, like lopsided access to education or work, go unabated, verbal demonstrations of ignorance are prosecuted like violence.

But Small Offenses Now Breed Big Offenses Later!
Do you esteem humans so lowly that you believe we’re mere machines of persecution? Democratic advances always proceed against exactly that “slippery slope” fallacy. Attempts to forcibly silence bigotry often prove disastrous for progressives; as Hume writes, with ample evidence, "control-freak governments and judges will always take requests to restrict one kind of speech as an invitation to restrict another."

British himself, Hume’s examples of legal proceedings against free speech come significantly from Britain. As Hume admits, America’s First Amendment makes flatly outlawing bigoted speech difficult. But Americans readily resort to tweet-storms, shaming campaigns, and other extra-legal techniques to derail free speech. Hume even quotes Hillary Clinton promising to use unsportsmanlike techniques to silence speech she finds objectionable. “Illiberal liberals,” Hume writes.

Hume’s argument contains plenty to anger liberals and conservatives alike, as his definition of free speech excludes sacred cows. But it also contains an important warning, too. As women, gays, and minorities fought for freer speech throughout the Twentieth Century, civil discourse widened. Now, arguably, it’s narrowing again. If we don’t demand truly free speech, we may see narrowness, silencing, and repression unseen within our lifetime. Consequences will be dire.

Very poor editing for the Kindle version

Someone did a horrible job at converting it into a Kindle version. The text is full of typos and "left overs" from the scan/OCR process (such as headers and page numbers appearing in the middle of the text). And charts and tables are just a mess, really confusing. Really a pity, because the book is an easy and enjoyable read.

This Works, And Isn't Boring

In the first few chapters, Harry Lorayne gets you to memorise 100 peg words - attaching words to numbers 1 to 100 and memorising them.

"What?!" was my reaction when I found out I was supposed to do it. My short-term and long-term memory began declining years ago due to depression and heavy medication. My test and exam results haven't been so good because of these memory problems. I didn't think I could do this 100 peg word stunt.

But don't worry, and try it. Lorayne first teaches you to associate consonant sounds for each digit from 1 to 9, and 0. For example, the sound for #1 is T or D (the letter T has one downstroke). The sound for #2 is N (typewritten n has two downstrokes).

This way, when you later have to memorise the peg word for #12, you know the word starts with a 't' sound and ends with a 'n' or 'd' sound. For example, 'tin'. For #21, the word would start with a 'n' sound and end with a 't' or 'd' sound. For example, 'net'.

So 100 words may be difficult to remember, but the ones Lorayne suggest will not so difficult with this "sound guide". And these 100 words are very important because they play a big part in the later chapters in helping you remember dates, appointments, telephone numbers, addresses etc.

Besides these, Super Power Memory also teaches you how to remember your grocery/to-do list, train your observation, remember speeches, foreign language vocabulary, names and faces, facts about people, how to not be absent-minded, how to amaze your friends with a 400 digit memory feat and how to memorise the Morse Code in 30 minutes.

I've put some of Lorayne's methods to the test and have been successful in keeping names, appointments and grocery lists in my head. I'm very pleased I read this book and forced myself to memorise those 100 peg words.

Excellent memory book

If you have any imagination at all, Harry Lorayne's memory techniques will work for you. His techniques can help you memorize long lists of unrelated items, memorize numbered lists, and come up with systems that will help you memorize nearly anything (speeches, lines for a play, daily schedules, etc.). They work wonders.
A reviewer below said that his systems involve coming up with and memorizing a story. That's not really true. Creating a simple image or short scene in your mind (takes seconds) is more than enough to help you memorize each item in a list. You simply have to link each item to the items before and after it, you don't have to have a long, continuous story. If you have much imagination at all, it's really simple and fast. If you're not a visual person, it may be more difficult.
However, there are two downsides to Lorayne's systems. The first is that most of his books, including this one, are very gimmicky. They have huge promises on the cover (many of which are true) that make them seem too good to be true, and he spends most of his time showing you parlor tricks to impress your friends, so for a serious study of memory techniques or for use in school or an academic setting, you may be better off picking up one of his other books.
The other downside is that his techniques mainly help with short- and mid-term memory. You will have to go over a list or a set of associations in your head many times, often over a period of a few days, before it will become long term memory. However, using his techniques still makes this faster and easier than repetition - repeating something to yourself a couple times a day for a few days until you're sure you have it memorized is much easier than going over it 100+ times.
