Genius

as a harpist trained outside the Suzuki school, I had never look at the Suzuki books. They seem to be perfect for teaching, introducing each skill one at a time. I think learning from these books would be much less overwhelming than most harpists find it to be, since skills like playing with 2 hands are so well separated from learning new fingering patterns. I have also found the book very useful as exercises when I want to concentrate on buffing up my form and techniques.

My kids have followed the Suzuki curriculum for several instruments. I think the Harp progression is probably the best organized in terms of cleanly adding skills one at a time for each song. I would recommend it to anyone learning harp -- child or adult, "Suzuki" or "traditional".

Nice explanations of how to switch fingers

A primer on the basics of harp playing on the classical Suzucki method. Nice explanations of how to switch fingers. Fingering is marked so not as to leave the beginner wondering. I have been playing folk harp for a year and was curious as to what the traditional method was taught. Picked up some good tips.

I am so pleased to have had the opportunity to study this book. It is extremely well wtitten, has explicit examples and provides a menu of wonderful supplimentary materials. Johnson and Christensen have reached the perfect meld of professional presentation and comprehensible material. Not only that, they are accessible for further elaboration. With the purchase of this book, the reader has a combination of knowledge and dedication to the education of research. It's one of the best I have come across in two years of doctoral level classes!

It was cheaper than buying from the book store; It's a dry educators manual for learniing how to use research data applying statistically. Example. Number cruching test scores to identify trends... Usually needed for a Masters of Education course.

Research, in general, is not a fun topic to study. This book had very good, easy to read explanations. Not a book I plan to hold on to, but it was definitely helpful in learning the basics of research and the purpose of research.

About the Author
With the publication in 1948 of his first novel, Cry the Beloved Country, Alan Paton won international acclaim and – with sales of over ten million copies of the book in paperback – could live thereafter by his pen. He wrote four other books and, from his home in Kloof, frequently contributed to the non-racial review Contact and chaired the board of Reality, the monthly journal of liberal opinion. He was leader of the country’s Liberal Party from 1953. He served as principal for 13 years (1935–48) of Diepkloof Reformatory for delinquent African boys, which provides the setting for some of his most memorable of stories.

In "A Deep Experience," a memorable short story from this new (complete) collection of South African writer Alan Paton's short fiction, Paton introduces Edith Rheinallt Jones, an elderly white woman from Johannesburg who worked tirelessly on behalf of the Wayfarers, a Girl Guide organization for non-white children, the Helping Hand Club (a hostel for African girls in Johannesburg), and many other activities, inspiring fierce love and unwavering loyalty among the African people with whom she worked. Driving her to a rural village, Paton found his life changed irrevocably by the warm and honest interactions he observed between Edith and the local people. "I was seeing a vision," he says, "which was never to leave me, illuminating the darkness of the days through which we live now."

Published by Random House of South Africa, The Hero of Currie Road presents two kinds of stories. About half of them are about individual boys under Paton's care at the Reformatory for African boys, where Paton was Principal from 1935 - 1948--sensitive and insightful tales about young teenagers at crossroads, often inspired to lead honorable lives but without the ability, always, to make the right choices. The second group of stories is about the white world, mostly adults, who reflect the ingrained belief in apartheid which has permanently limited the attitudes, aspirations, and achievements of the native majority population. Together these stories show Alan Paton in his most personal, most revealing moments, in which he frankly states opinions that he cannot make in his novels.

Many of these stories show the effects of exclusion on children, and Paton often reveals the paternal feelings he has for the reformatory's youngest boys, in particular, bemoaning the fact that these ten- or eleven-year-olds don't belong in a reformatory with boys who are in their late teens. In "Ha'penny,"a powerfully moving story, an orphan makes up stories about his "family," in order to be like other children. In "The Divided House," young Jacky, always in trouble, suddenly experiences a religious conversion, spending long hours in prayer and reflection, his determination to become a priest interrupted only by sessions of dagga, a wild cannabis. "Death of a Totsi" tells of an inmate's terrible fears of a gang to which he no longer belongs.

The exclusion theme, pervasive throughout South Africa at the time, continues into the "white" stories. In "Debbie Go Home," he shows a family in which a mother wants her black daughter to attend the black debutante ball. Her husband and son object, believing they should not "lick the hand that whips us." In "The Magistrate's Daughter," a young white boy, the son of a blacksmith, befriends the son of a magistrate, playing tennis with him all summer, until it comes time for a summer dance, a turning point. In "Life for a Life," the harshest of the stories, an innocent man falls victim to white vengeance which is rampant. "Injustice" takes on new meanings. As Paton shares his personal meditations, he shows himself to be deeply sensitive to the critical issues of his day, and his ability to reveal characters and their essential humanity from all walks of life makes this collection--and his powerful legacy--come alive. n Mary Whipple

Nora Roberts has gotten lazy.

I think I have read all of her books, she is one of my favorite let's do nothing today but settle down with a book and be entertained. It's like going to see a romantic comedy, you don't learn anything from it but you are usually entertained.

I have noticed that there has been a slip in her recent works, her novels have always been formulaic. There are always, three or four brothers/sisters/friends, they all usually own their businesses, lawyers/bookshop owners/flower shop owners/wedding planners they all pair off by the last book. Usually there is a good mystery, whether it is supernatural.. these last two series, the bride quartet and this Innsboro one has left me increasingly disappointed and frankly that is saying something because I don't hold Roberts works to high standards. I think of them like the they are cotton candy books, fun and entertaining every once in a while but if you eat too much you get a stomach ache and you aren't going to get anything nutritious out of them.

This, the last of the Innsboro Trilogy was terrible, the "mystery" was obvious, the characters underdeveloped and typical. The beefy construction worker, and the perky organized once beauty queen, really? Or the fiery redhead and the organized hot manager. They all spend an inordinate amount of time complimenting each other. It actually drives me crazy, they are constantly remarking on how strong and powerful they all are, how beautiful and funny.. I actually rolled my eyes reading it, and have been doing the last couple of her books. The last time I rolled my eyes while reading, was Twilight. It is almost as if, the more popular Nora Roberts has become as a pulp romance writer the less connected she is with how normal people interact. Is she complimented so often now that it is how she thinks normal people talk. I loved reading her older works, but she can only rework her old trilogies for so long. I mean the blond, the redhead and the brunette, is she afraid her readers won't be able to distinguish them? This was Irish Trilogy reworked with less engaging characters and a terrible mystery.

Paltry effort, not worth $10 on kindle, and most certainly not worth the paperback cost of $16. I highly recommend waiting until her next book maybe she will have gotten some of her mojo back.

Dull, boring, below average and below expectations

This latest and last book in the Inn Boonsboro trilogy is so slow and boring that, for probably the first time ever, I don't expect to finish a Nora Roberts book (under any nom de plume).

The story is slow, there is absolutely no tension between Hope and Ryder, the dialogue is terse, short and cartoon-y (are they all speaking in Tweets?), the trilogy setting of one building site after another has become stunningly repetitive and pedantic, Ryder is a throwback (in the guise of a 'regular guy'?) and Hope is just flat and uninteresting. Even the 'ghost story' of Lizzy / Eliza is dull.

I've really enjoyed NR's writing for a long time, but if this is the future, I'm opting out.

I can't even be bothered to write more of a review. Lola Jane has said most of what I would have said, but probably better, so I won't take time to repeat her views - I'll merely direct you to read her review.

The Perfect Hope - Trilogy that fizzled at the end

In the final book of the Boonsboro Trilogy, the focus is no longer on building the Inn Boonsboro, but rather a couple different storylines take center stage. The first being the obvious romance that's been building between Ryder and Hope from the moment she stepped into town and was hired as the inn keeper. The ghost, Lizzy, stills plays a major role as her story gets wrapped up. It wouldn't be a book in this trilogy if the Montgomery men weren't hard at work building something and this time its Avery's new restaurant and their mother's new fitness center that we get blow by blow accounts of during the renovation process.

Ryder has always been a little gruff (I like gruff, usually) a bit anti-social, not awkward but the man just likes his quiet life, he's a man of very few words and is happy just working and having his dog around. He's a bit surly toward Hope early on. He thinks she's too classy for him, all wine and fancy shoes while he's beer and football. Which is true, they are opposites but Hope is still recovering from being led on by her ex and lied to horribly. So in Ryder, she finds a man who will always be honest, will always be straight with her and even though they might not look like an obvious match from the outside, they click as a couple. As far as their romance, they went back and forth a bit trying to figure out if they were an actual couple or just having some fun and sex. But it was just bland. There was nothing about them as a couple that had me interested in their story and excited to see them together. Ryder's way of communicating doesn't come across well on page. Like I mentioned above, he's a man of few words, often times saying just one or two word sentences that came off very short and abrupt. On the one hand, he is a tough guy to warm up to, and I was happy he found someone in Hope that "got" him. On the other, I wish we could have seen more of the Ryder that came out when he was around his nephews. His character felt a little lighter in his mood and tone with the three young boys and I really enjoyed getting to know that Ryder, it's just too bad that guy wasn't on page more.

Ah, the ghost. Needless to say, her story comes to a happy conclusion as well. I didn't care for this storyline throughout the series and cared for it even less when she started talking to Hope and her girlfriends in this story. Since it was a storyline that I never got on board with, I was pulled out of the book every time the scenes switched to something ghost related, which was often be it having Lizzy in the scene or Hope researching the ghosts past, trying to find her lost love.

I did enjoy the girlfriend scenes between Hope, Avery and Clare. Their scenes reminded me of the best friends scenes in Nora Roberts Bridal Quartet series and was a major reason why I enjoyed that series so much. I liked seeing the women together, helping each other. They laugh a lot, love each other and they're scenes that I looked forward to reading. But they just weren't enough to build the book around.

I was very up and down with this entire Boonsboro Trilogy. There were moments and characters (especially Avery and Owen) that I enjoyed reading about. But there were just as many moments and characters (the ghost and the whole building of the inn) that I struggled with. This book ended up not keeping my attention and was I bored through much of it. There are a few nice moments, but they're few and far between and unfortunately I feel like the trilogy limped out instead of going out with a bang.

Take lemon, make lemonade?

A great idea for a book, poorly executed. The fault is Rankin's alone - Ms. Klum is famously photogenic, she looks terrific, and the paper quality can't be beat. But the layout ideas are terrible, the worst being liquid chocolate. Why would anyone seek to hide the world's most beautiful woman that way?
Bot worry not! Between some cheap document frames and a pair of sewing shears, maybe 8 or 9 of these photos are gotta-have-it keepers that, if you're of that generation and still single, you can post on a single blank wall as a matching set. Sounds tacky, but wow!, does that really work!

Dynamic Personality

When Rankin's Heidlilicious arrived, the book was wrapped in shrink wrap. While removing this plastic, I immediately could appreciate the physical quality of this book. It seems many book publishers are looking for ways to reduce the costs associated with publication and quality often suffers as a result. Heidilicious is the exception.

The dust jacket is thick and double folded at the edges, providing sturdy protection to the hot pink cloth bound boards of the book. If the dust jacket is removed, a smooth-lined silhouette of the female form is embossed in white on the front. The contrast between the white figure and the pink cloth is striking.

The binding appears tight and double-stitched and should survive more than one generation of heavy use.

The high quality of Rankin's photographs are consistent throughout the book and the paper stock used for printing is thick high quality gloss. The ink goes all the way to the edges of the paper.

The mood of the photographs remains playful throughout, but the approach is very dynamic. Heidi mimics a kitten, is clothed only with chocolate syrup, reveals an angry clenched-fisted snarl, frolics nude on the beach, and remains stunningly sexy regardless.

There is a text interview by her husband, Seal, and an interview of Heidi herself. This text is translated into several languages and first appears to be longer than actuality.

If searching for criticism, one may discover a couple of page-spanning photographs that are interrupted by the middle seam of the book, making them difficult to fully appreciate.

Overall this is a quality photographic essay of personality and liberating sexuality. Rankin provides a beautiful collection that constantly reminds of the playful fun side of humanity, and choosing Heidi to help inspire this message was brilliant.

Wish there were more outfits

I guess because of the cover I was expecting more playful outfits. Something a little more playful Victoria Secret like. It is definitely not that. It is an artsy look at some photographs of Heidi. The book, paper and binding get a 5 star for sure very, very well done. I wish they would redo this with some more of the stuff the demographic might like.
