Review
Praise for It Gets Worse:

"Dawson exhibits his signature brand of twisted humor and neuroses in his second volume of personal essays. [His] journey is fraught with sadness…and comedy…His self-deprecating and outrageous humor…deserves comparison to David Sedaris." (Publishers Weekly)

“These 13 essays collected here are…humorous, but some are quite moving…One a humor scale of 1 to 10, 1 being meh and 10 being a hoot, Dawson’s essays earn a solid 7. Teen fans of David Sedaris will enjoy Dawson’s perky essays." (Booklist)

"Shane Dawson brings us possibly – no, definitely – the most hilarious read of summer. In this uproarious essay collection, Dawson unleashes all his wit and explores his mortifying childhood and every awkward moment as he came to terms with bisexuality. Overflowing with humor and sharp observations on the struggles surrounding modern culture, It Gets Worse is comfort food for the millennial soul."
  (Sunset Magazine)

“If you're a fan of his, it's safe to say this is already pre-ordered for you, but if you haven't been introduced to this YouTube sensation, I'd recommend checking him out if you're a millennial who loves to laugh.”  (Bustle.com)

Praise for I Hate Myselfie:
“Though Shane is infamous for his biting wit and crude humor, I Hate Myselfie is as much heart as it is crass.... [It] proves that laughing at yourself can help overcome even the most embarrassing experiences.... Shane may 'hate his selfie,' but his millions of fans will love it.” (AccessHollywood.com)

"This book is a haven for difference in a sea of more of the same with YouTuber books. The essay approach really worked for the book." (The Guardian)

"Like Dawson’s previous book, I Hate Myselfie, It Gets Worse is a collection of humorous autobiographical essays...laced with both bracing honesty and Dawson’s signature humor."
  (Entertainment Weekly (ew.com))

OMG YES!
By Mario Chegini
I am just about halfway done with the book and I just have to say, it has to be one of the funniest books I've ever read! The book starts out kind of slow and introduces the reader to Shane's childhood, his relationship with his brother, and his battle with his sexuality. 5 stars for the content. It later starts to pick up and we learn about his adolescent awkwardness and his college stories. Now, about the actual printing and shipping of the book: My book arrived in a yellow Amazon envelope slightly crushed and bent, and upon reading the book, there seem to be black dots on certain pages. C'mon Amazon! But anyway, this is a great book!

my new bible
By Olivia Weiss
I've watched Shane on YouTube since 2010 and I blame him for my sense of messed up humor and I wouldn't have it any other way. So when Shane wrote this book I preordered it immediately and I'm so happy I did. This book will make you laugh and teach you to stay humble. As soon as I got it in the mail I couldn't put it down! It distracted me from my anxiety and kept me smiling and laughing. I really recommended this book to anyone with a messed up sense of humor or if you're looking for a quick laugh.

Relatabe, self-depricating and humorous
By T. Skylar
There's more self-deprecating humour where that came from! I rarely, if ever pre-order books, but l pre-ordered It Gets Worse by Shane Dawson on the basis of how much l enjoyed his first book. Shane was one of the first YouTubers l truly paid attention to. He has become synonymous with the very word "YouTuber". I found Dawson to be very relatable and engaging in his New York Times best seller I Hate Myselfie and by the end of the book l found myself wanting more. Well, more has arrived in the form of Shane's new volume, It Gets Worse.

Despite it's rather depressing title, it is not a negative book and it offers a glimmer of light for all struggling teenagers. While l can't relate on a personal basis to every (or even most) events described by Shane, he has the ability to be personable and connect with his audience. As proven with his first volume, his ability to reach his audience begins, but doesn't end behind a computer screen. Dawson is witty, charming and displays surprising dept. He's watchable but also happens to be highly readable as well. Whether it's stories of his family pretending to win the lottery or a difficult heartbreak, the book is hard to put down.

I must say l like Shane's second book more than the first. While l Hate Myselfie was a funny collection of first experiences and essays of embarrassing stories, It Gets Worse picks deep at the metaphorical scabs on the YouTuber's skin. We find here a more mature Shane Dawson —that's not to say he gets all philosophical on us plans to stop making Galaxy videos— he's just more comfortable with himself and aware. There are some darker moments and references to suicide and Dawson wanting to die as a teenager, but those are not including for comedic purposes. They are honest thoughts he had as he went through adolescence. The beloved YouTuber has won his battle with depression and perhaps his tale can inspire his following. When Shane tackles his confused feelings about his own sexuality, unrequited loves and life lessons learned he allows himself to be completely exposed.

Most adults would likely gain very little from reading It Gets Worse as they may not completely grasp Shane's brand of humour. l believe reading about these experiences can be truly beneficial for a teenager going through the hardships that come with adolescence. It gives them a sense of understand and tells them that they are understood. Besides, it's not all gloom and doom, there are some laugh-out-loud moments in these pages!

For the record, I'll still watch every Galaxy video you make Shane. 4/5 stars.

The Holiday Murders, by Robert Gott

On Christmas Eve, 1943, the newly formed but undermanned Homicide division of the Melbourne police force is called to investigate the vicious double murder of a father and son. When Military Intelligence becomes involved, Homicide's Inspector Titus Lambert must unravel the personal from the political.

If only the killings had stopped at two. The police are desperate to come to grips with an extraordinary and disquieting upsurge of violence. For Constable Helen Lord, it is an opportunity to make her mark in a male-dominated world where she is patronised as a novelty. For Detective Joe Sable, the investigation forces a reassessment of his indifference to his Jewish heritage. Racing against the clock, the police uncover simmering tensions among secretive local Nazi sympathisers as a psychopathic fascist usurper makes his move.

The Holiday Murders explores a little-known and sometimes violent corner of Australian history, and finds oddly modern echoes in its paranoia, xenophobia, and ugly fervour.

Well enough written, but too gratuitously violent
By YarraGirl
I enjoyed the depiction of wartime Melbourne, and I liked the characters of the police officers. What I don't understand is why Gott needed to depict such gruesome crimes. I read crime novels for characterisation, but primarily for the mystery - who did it, why did they do it, will the protagonists catch them before they kill again? I don't like the suspicion that the author took delight in depicting murder in the most repellent and sickening way possible. When did writing murder mysteries become a contest for who has the most hideous crime? And why, if the action is flagging, did he need to throw in the old trope - sexual violence against women. The pornography of violence is all too common in 'hard-boiled' murder mysteries nowadays, and personally I don't like reading it. Now, Gott isn't graphic, but my imagination is all too able to fill in the gaps. Filling in the gaps was sickening. For that reason I lost interest half-way through and skimmed large parts of the novel. Hammett, Chandler, McDonald, Burke - really good mystery writers didn't need to use sickening violence to move the plot along. Gott's a good writer - he doesn't need to do so either.

`Titus Lambert had never been fond of Christmas.'
By Jennifer Cameron-Smith
In Melbourne, on Christmas Eve in 1943, a young man and his father are found violently killed in their home. While the scene is staged as a murder and suicide, it doesn't take long for Inspector Titus Lambert to see realise that both men have been murdered. Inspector Lambert is a member of Melbourne's newly formed Homicide Division which is unfortunately undermanned as a consequence of the severe manpower shortage at this stage during World War II. Military Intelligence also becomes involved in the case - co-opting assistance from Inspector Lambert's offsider, Detective Joe Sable. With only part-time access to Detective Sable, Inspector Lambert calls on Constable Helen Lord to assist.

The novel is set between Christmas Eve 1943 and the early new year of 1944. Trying to solve the horrific murders of John and Xavier Quinn leads Lambert and his team through a Melbourne divided into wealthy and poor and into a dark space inhabited by anti-Semitism, racism, violence and hatred.
Aspects of this novel are factually based. A group known as the Australia First Movement (most active between 1936 to 1942), with its monthly magazine the Publicist, had moved beyond the literary figures it first attracted (including Xavier Herbert, Eleanor Dark and Miles Franklin) to Nazi sympathizers and vicious anti-Semitism.

As Joe Sable says:

`The Publicist costs sixpence. Sixpence. That was all you had to pay to be admitted into the realm of pure evil.' `The people who wrote this, and the people who read it, weren't thousands of miles away in Europe. They were here, in Melbourne.'

It's a sobering thought, and makes this a confronting read. I usually prefer my crime fiction with less of a basis in fact - it's more comfortable that way.
And within the brief period covered by this novel there are other murders and a number of violent acts. The tension increases as Lambert, Sable and Lord race against time to try to prevent more deaths. I found myself racing through this novel - both wanting to see justice done and wanting to learn more about the characters involved. There were a few twists and turns I didn't anticipate, and there's some history I want to explore.

`In the end, though, don't most investigations depend on the carelessness and stupidity of the perpetrators?'

Jennifer Cameron-Smith

When the trad publisher wins
By Amazon Customer
I heard a radio interview in which the author, having written a series of semi-humorous thrillers found this book, then in the same style, was returned by the publisher. Apparently the message was "take it seriously". The author did.
Here's the advantage of Kindle. I called up the book while the interview was still running and had it waiting for me and ready to read when the session was over!
I have since recommended it highly to my writing colleagues and also read star reviews in the dailies. For a non-Australian, even of my generation, the theme of the fascist Australia First movement, traitors during World War II, is probably unfamiliar, although it has attracted academic attention. Perhaps it's somewhat esoteric to a postwar generation (which is nearly everybody, now). But take it as a thriller, rather than a mystery, and it enthralls. There is no mystery in "who dunnit?" - just mounting horror and tension - but the denouement is a heart-stopping surprise. Read it and find out.

The Philosophy of Sadhana (SUNY Series in Contemporary Continental Philosophy), by Debabrata Sen Sharma

After presenting a general survey of spiritual practice in the different schools of Indian philosophy, the author focuses on the Trika School, popularly called Kashmir Shaivism. He deals clearly and exhaustively with such topics as Shaktipat (the descent of Divine Grace), Diksha (initiation), and the role of the Guru. His treatment of the various paths (upayas) appropriate for the different types of practitioners is especially useful.
The book ends with a chapter on enlightenment (jivanmukti). This chapter not only presents the meaning of self-realization-in-this-lifetime, but offers material on this topic for the first time in English.

A Great Introduction to Kashmir Shavism and Shaktipat
By L. Ron Gardner
"The Philosophy of Sadhana" is a wonderful introduction to the Hindu yoga tradition of Kashmir Shaivism and the function of Shaktipat (The descent of Divine Power) in the spiritual en-Light-enment process. Shakti is a synonym for the Christian Holy Spirit and the Buddhist Sambhogakaya, and both Christian mystics and Vajrayana Buddhists will glean insights from this text that will help them to better understand and practice their own tradition.

The tap root of all the major religions is yoga--and the highest form of yoga is Divine yoga: uniting one's soul (or consciousness) with universal Spirit, Shakti. This text points out the limitations of Raja and Jnana yoga, and explains that only Mother Shakti, Divine Power, can sever an individual's knot of karma and free him from his bondage (or self-contraction).

The philosophy of shaktipata
By Ashtar Command
"The Philosophy of Sadhana" is a scholarly introduction to Trika, a Tantric school of Hinduism associated with the region of Kashmir in northern India. It's often referred to as Kashmir Shaivism. The author, Deba Brata SenSharma, is an Indian scholar whose teacher was both a scholarly expert on Trika and a practitioner of the same system. The book doesn't deal with the history of Kashmir Shaivism, but is rather a study of the basics of Trika metaphysics. Sadhana could be translated "spiritual practice", but the book doesn't contain detailed descriptions of the rituals of this particular school. Rather, the rituals, yogic practices and mystical experiences are mentioned only when necessary to illustrate the philosophical underpinnings of the system - hence, the title "The Philosophy of Sadhana".

The book is well-written and can probably be read with some profit by students of comparative religion. However, the large number of Sanskrit terms and the rather complex metaphysics of Trika probably make the book difficult for the general reader.

Although Trika refers to the Divine as the Supreme Lord and as Shiva (a deity in the Hindu pantheon), I got the impression that its view of God is really impersonal. Since "Shiva" both includes and transcends the world, Trika could be classified as a form of impersonal panentheism. I also got the impression, however, that the author doesn't consider this an important issue, not even when discussing differences between Kashmir Shaivism and theistic Vaishnavism! A more fundamental issue is the contrast between seeing the Divine as essentially passive (a position the author attributes to Advaita Vedanta), and seeing it as essentially dynamic. In Trika, God has two sides: a passive and an active one, forever united in a dyadic relationship. When discussing the divine dyad, "Shiva" refers to the passive principle while "Shakti" is the active one. (Note that Shakti, usually seen as a feminine power or goddess in Hinduism, is considered active!) Shiva creates the world through Shakti. Creation can also be described as Shiva temporarily hiding himself from himself, transforming himself into a seemingly limited cosmos with a multiple of mortal beings. There is no creation ex nihilo, but rather a complex process of emanations from the Divine. Since the world is part of Shiva-Shakti, the Ultimate Reality, Trika doesn't consider it to be a sheer illusion. This is another contrast with Advaita Vedanta. Interestingly, Trika holds that the Divine has free will, and has created the world accordingly. Doesn't free will imply a person?

The cosmos is hierarchically structured, with a pure creation of god-like beings followed by an impure creation of various spirit-beings, humans and subhuman creatures. The book doesn't discuss all the 36 tattvas (emanations) emerging from the Supreme Lord. It does imply, however, that there is no evolution in the modern scientific sense. The universe was apparently created all at once, and the various stages of its emergence can be differentiated only "logically", not temporally. This creates a tension with the process of liberation, and the future dissolution of the cosmos, which *do* seem to happen in time.

As for liberation from the cycles of life, death and rebirth, Trika holds that it's possible only through divine grace (shaktipata). This is a central concept within Kashmir Shaivism. Yet, there is an obvious tension in the system (noted by the author himself) between the idea that shaktipata is unfathomable (otherwise it wouldn't be grace!) and that it's only bestowed upon people who are ready to receive it. There are also different degrees of shaktipata. In practice, it seems that concerted human effort is needed to receive the desired grace. Trika is a guru-centred system, and the practitioner must be initiated (diksha) by an appropriate teacher. He must also carry out a long range of rituals, chant mantras, practice yoga, and so on. The mystical experiences in this tradition seem to be very dramatic, as indicated by the book's description of "the flames of the Bhairava fire", experienced by the yogin as he reaches his goal.

The goal of sadhana is to lay off the physical body and become consciously one with Shiva, i.e. Shiva seen as a purely spiritual force "above" the material universe. Some advanced practitioners accomplish liberation and destruction of the body simultaneously, while others decide to keep their physical bodies despite already being freed, in order to carry out good works. They become one with Shiva after the natural death of the physical body. Less advanced practitioners become a kind of spirit-beings which are completely dependent on Shiva's active intervention to progress further. A more elaborate scheme is to become a deva (a kind of demi-god) and progress to oneness with Shiva after the long lifespan of such a creature have run its course. Such a deva will presumably administer boons to humanity, and maybe even dispense shaktipata on the worthier ones...

One day, our universe will be destroyed or dissolved, but Trika holds the perspective that eventually *all* beings in samsara will be saved and united with Shiva. After all, since everything *is* Shiva, it's only natural that everything will - perhaps after billions of years - reach consciousness *as* Shiva. From my philosophical perspective, however, the entire process seems fundamentally meaningless. Shiva's dance is eternal, and new universes will be created after ours have disappeared. Shiva will once again occlude himself and create a world of evil, suffering and limitation. What in heaven's name is the point?! Trika doesn't seem much different from other forms of Hinduism (or "Hinduism") on this score. The capricious god controls everything as a puppeteer in a grand eternal return whose purpose is unfathomable - which, at least to the Western mind, means that there really isn't a purpose in the first place.

Perhaps Shiva-Shakti is simply a demiurge who forgot his purposes...

With those personal reflections, I close my review of "The Philosophy of Sadhana" by Deba Brata SenSharma.

Trika sadhana
By Sheila Sirey
This is a very interesting book where the different types of diksha and the paths which correspond to them are discussed. Vocabulary in Sanskrit is used heavily and can be somewhat confusing if you don't know some of the terms already. This goes with the very precise, nuanced text of the book.
