Hermine, geborene Prinzessin Reuß ä.L., ist von ihren Zeitgenossen häufig nicht sehr positiv beurteilt worden; daran mögen ihre Lebenstüchtigkeit und ihr daraus resultierendes Selbstbewußtsein nicht ganz unschuldig sein, andererseits auch ihr leidenschaftliches Temperament, welches sich bis hin zu Wutausbrüchen steigern konnte. In den Tagebüchern Sigurds von Ilsemann, aber auch in anderen Veröffentlichungen aus dem Umkreis von Haus Doorn finden sich immer wieder Belege für diese Unbeherrschtheit, die so ganz im Widerspruch stand zu der sonst und nach außen hin von der Autorin betont gepflegten und geforderten Förmlichkeit. Bei der Lektüre ihrer Ausführungen läßt sich erkennen, daß sie eine außergewöhnlich gebildete und vielseitig interessierte Frau war, die durchaus ihre - von ihrer Position als Mitglied einer alten Familie regierender Fürsten geprägte - eigene Meinung zu den Ereignissen ihrer Zeit hatte und diese auch vehement vertrat.

This compilation of research on the peculiar use of language in gay and lesbian communities breaks new ground. The first of three parts, "Liminal Lexicality," documents lexical usage and variation in deaf, Jewish, Japanese, and other communities. "Queerspeak" looks at "computer-mediated text" (E-mail), homophobic slang, media reports, and literary language to conclude whether characteristics specific to gay and lesbian speech must be found exclusively in speech to label them as "gay." Finishing the volume, "Linguistic Gender-bending" examines the fluid nature of gender and sexuality and how that may be seen in the conscious use of language as it applies to hermaphrodites, the castrated hijras of India, Nigerian transvestites, Yoruba priests, Parisian gays, and Japanese same-sex couples. Lavender linguistics at its finest.

I bought this book on a whim, and have found it compelling reading ever since. It contains excellently written essays which very thoroughly explore their immediate subject. As a book on linguistics, however, be prepared for occasionally arcane essays like "The Colour of His Eyes: Polari and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence". If you are interested in language issues and would like to broaden your world-view, I can't recommend this book enough.
My favourite line, from the essay on Gay Man's English: "Honey, what you see is what you get!" Fortunately, with this book, you get more than what you see.

Custom Channel URL info is out of date

There is a lot of helpful information here. However, given that the publication date was April of this year, there should have been an update regarding the Google+ integration and how this affected the customization of the user's Channel URL, a very important core piece of YouTube identity. Page 52 describes the old version of the process. Google now requires significant skin in the game, either by adhering to the four criteria just below, or by linking one's website with one's Google+ id and placing that code snippet on every page of one's website:

To get a custom URL for your channel, your account needs to be in good standing and meet a few other requirements:

500 or more subscribers
Channels is at least 30 days old
Channel has uploaded a photo for the channel icon
Channel has uploaded channel art

You can also qualify for a custom URL by linking and verifying your official webpage with your channel or +Page.

Getting 500 subscribers may be easy for some content providers, but for those starting out, who need the platform for artistic, creative, or business exposure, it takes a while to accrue that many. In fact, I frequently reference this book over the Field's Virology volumes because of the complete and up-to-date information supplied. I would recommend this book to anyone in the molecular virology field (actually, my background is in molecular bacteriology and this book helped me easily transition to virology). Invaluable!

Although there have been some negitive reviews of the other grade levels in this series, I have personally found this book to be very through and helpful to my 9 year old. I thought the set up of a certain number of pages per day was convenient, and just the right amount to keep his interest. The colors and pictures are great, and the price is right! I especially like the teaching suggestions in the back of the book - giving you the option of doing as little or as much as YOU feel comfortable doing on any given subject with your child. I fully intend to continue using this series as long as I can.

Excellent product

This is an excellent comprehensive book for each corresponding grade level. Though some parents will find, as I have, that their homeschool child is more advanced than they would be in public school. My children grades 4th, 3rd and 1st, are finding each of their books a little too easy, so be sure to supplement each compresive curriculum book with some additional books. For example, the "Skill Sharpeners" is an excellent series of books.

It was either this workbook or summer school for my 8-year-old last year. She completed more than half the book over the summer and finished up third grade with a bang. Needless to say, we will continue with this series this summer. Comprehensive Curriculum for Grade 3 is in our cart. It's great to have such a complete book to review all subjects over the summer.
